Living well support programme: Yoga focusing elderly ethnic minorities

Community Development Centre-UK (CODEK-UK) organised a Ward Working Fund funded by Brent Council, Ward Working Fund from 22 February to 14 June 2015.

 

Ward Working funds contributed to a Community let environmental awareness programme especially on the responsible waste management. Following were the main activities of the project:

 

  • Production of an outreach plan. Areas for outreach include Abbey Estate and Atlip neighbourhood development.
  • Alperton ward councillors would like to have some involvement in project in order to act as community advocates and give advice.
  • For CODEC-UK to work in partnership with other local groups such as Alperton Riverside Town Team & Alperton Community School.
  • Involving residents that this initiative is funded by Alperton Ward Working in our leaflets, promotion and when resident participate.

It has significantly helped the organisation and local community members in the following areas:

  1. Awareness among the community members about the legislation and and other obligations regarding the household waste management.
  2. Provide information about the existing process of municipal waste control and collection process regarding household wastes such as landfill wastes, mixed recycling, green organic bin recycling and food wastes.
  3. Raise awareness of and provide information on issues affecting the environment by the unmanaged household wastes.
  4. Issues and effects of fly tipping
  5. Active participation by bringing cross community members in one place and working jointly to achieve the goal of ‘Cleaner and Greener Brent’.

This project was funded to address the following objectives:

 

  1. Production of outreach plan

 

  • Outreach plan for ‘Reduce, Re-use and Recycle project was prepared with 12 activities and agreed with the ward working team (Outreach plan is attached)
  • Leaflets regarding Household waste management were produced in differene local languages viz Nepali and Hindi and distributed to the targeted households.

 

  1.   Involvement of Alperton Ward Councillors.

 

Head of the councillors Mr. Muhammed Butt, Councillor Bhagwanji Chauhan, Councillor Ms Milli Patel actively participated in the workshop held in Abbey Estate Community Hall, Alperton on 11th April 2015 and provided useful information regarding Brent Council’s policy, priorities/plans and activities regarding HH-waste management. They also made the participants aware about the consequences of irresponsible waste management and fly tipping. They emphasised the importance of residents participation in waste management. Mr. Butt stated the importance of community participation on the responsible household waste management and appreciated the initiation taken by CODEC-UK for involving different community members.

Allen Carol, Neighbour Coordinator, Partnership & Engagement actively participated in each workshop organised by CODEC-UK and provided valuable feedbacks and information about the council’s policy on waste management and the supports that the council provides to residents

 

  1. Working with Partnership with other local groups

 

CODEC-UK participated jointly with Canal River Trust on awareness education to school children about community event for people to help with a litter pick and also to make bird boxes to be put-up along the canal (Alperton Canal). In the event volunteers from CODEC-UK actively participated alongside with the volunteers of Canal River Trust.

 

  1. Informing residents that the initiative is funded by Alperton Ward Working in our leaflets, promotion and when residents participate

 

  • In each of the workshops the participants were informed that the initiative was funded by Alperton Ward Working Fund.
  • Leaflets were produced in Nepali/Hindi languages and distributed to participants and residents informing that the initiatives or project has been funded by Alperton Ward working fund. The leaflets provided by Veolia Realm and Brent Council were also distributed.
  • Brent Council website also published the information about the event programme on Brent Council website.

 

  1. Acknowledging the financial and other support of council in the CODEC-Website

 

  • Every workshop information and activities has been acknowledged in the website of CODEC

  1. Ensure the equality of opportunity in delivery of its services to residents
  • The project has been successful in bringing cross community members in one place wording jointly to achieve something good for all the people regardless of religion, race, culture and age. The participation register shows the presence of such participants.
  1. Orientation and information workshops on household waste management in partnership with Veolia Realm: Altogether 3 of the workshops organized by CODEC-UK on ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ were facilitated by resource persons from Veolia Realm Wembley. On 1st March the workshop was organized in Alperton Community School and was facilitated by Mr. Darren Kelly, Education Officer. On 8th March the workshop was organized in Heather Park Drive and facilitated by Educatio Officer Ms Anna-Marie Defontaine. Similarly the another event of workshop for the participants residing around Abbay Avenue, Foolwood Avenue and Crabtree Avenue was organized in Abbey Estate Community Centre and facilitated by Ms Anna Marie.
  1. CODEC-UK has invited the representatives of other organisations like local schools, Churches, temples, masjids, safer neighbourhood and other local community organisations based in Brent. However, we received responses from some organisation, however we did not receive any response for participation from some other organisations.
